Bursaries

The Empire Theatres Foundation supports the professional development of artists by offering two kinds of bursaries - the Brian Boak Bursary and a Youth Program Bursary.

Brian Boak Bursaries

The 'Outstanding Performer' bursary, worth $25,000 and the 'Developing Performer' bursary, worth up to $10,000, have been made possible through the generosity of the late Brian Boak, a staunch supporter of the performing arts on the Darling Downs.

Each bursary is designed to provide opportunities for career development in the areas of acting, dancing, singing or instrumental performance. These bursaries are offered in alternating years.

The 'Outstanding Perfomer' bursary offers support to a suitably qualified applicant with demonstrated exceptional performance and career potential. It must be used to facilitate his or her ongoing career development through study and/or performance at a suitable centre of excellence and/or under the guidance of a suitably distinguished mentor.

The 'Developing Performer' bursary offers support to a person wishing to pursue a program of study or professional development in the areas of acting, dancing, singing or instrumental performance. The bursary must be used to assist in defraying the cost of participation in the proposed program by contribution to course fees, accommodation and/or approved living expenses or such other expenses as approved by the Foundation Trustees.

Applications are invited from artists, aged 18 to 35, from anywhere in Australia. However, preference may be given to applicants residing in the Darling Downs region.

The 2012 Brian Boak Bursary round opens on 3 October 2011 and will close on 31 January 2012.
