The Empire Theatre provides opportunities for local performers and stage crew to work in a professional theatre environment and bring exceptionally high quality productions to the Toowoomba region.
Homegrown: A Studio Program
As part of our 2012 Homegrown Program, the Empire Theatre is offering local producers of theatrical, dance or musical work an opportunity to perform a show in the Empire Theatres Studio performance space. The Wizard Of Oz
In 2012, the Empire Theatre's major production will be The Wizard of Oz. Auditions have now concluded. If you want to be involved in construction or dressmaking backstage, please contact Tim Panitz on 07 4698 9900 or email productions@empiretheatre.com.au.
April's Fool
The Empire Theatre has received funding to tour its 2010 production of April's Fool nationwide in 2012. The go ahead has come from Playing Australia, the Australian Government's national touring program for the performing arts. Playing Australia has announced a grant for the Empire Theatre to tour the show to 22 venues across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.
April's Fool, an Empire Theatres production about grief, loss and recovery, premiered at the Oakey Cultural Centre last year, before travelling to Chinchilla, Dalby, Ipswich and Brisbane. It tells the story of Toowoomba teenager, Kristjan Terauds, who died due to complications from illicit drug use in April 2009. In the lead-up to Kristjan's death, his father, David Terauds, kept a journal documenting the experience and generously allowed the Empire Theatre to bring Kristjan's story to the stage.
David Burton, an award-winning playwright, was then commisioned by the Empire Theatre Projects Company to piece the play together. April's Fool was also recently shortlisted for the Premier's Literary Award for Best New Play. It will begin its tour in May 2012.
