| Empire Theatres presents Taik Oz Blessings of the Earth Featuring Riley Lee, shakuhachi “Blessings of the Earth” is a rich and varied evening of music featuring shakuhachi, taiko, voice and movement. The program features shakuhachi Grand Master Riley Lee and TaikOz member Anton Lock performing a dramatic solo dance from Kaidan, choreographed by one of Australia’s most renowned choreographers, Meryl Tankard. Like waves in the ocean and thunder in the distance the sound of TaikOz is elemental. Haunting, unearthly melodies contrast with thunderous rhythms that crack, splinter, somersault and hurtle into the air. TaikIn a performance that conjures waves of rhythmic invention, born of gymnastic grace and primal ecstatic energy, TaikOz’s taiko and flutes, dancing and singing will take you on a journey through space and time. “TaikOz lit up Launceston, the crowd stamping and cheering for more. Each member seems to be able to do everything. They sing, they dance, they play like angels.” THE AUSTRALIAN “More than a bunch of drummers... TaikOz can soar in hypnotic waves of rhythm.” SYDNEY MORNING HERALD “TaikOz astound and mesmerise with its musicianship. TaikOz show what cross-cultural collaboration at its best can achieve. No wonder the show finished with a standing ovation.” COURIER MAIL “High energy action... hand and drumstick seem almost to melt into each other in a perfect synergy of man and instrument.” THE AUSTRALIAN |
