Following on from the extremely successful 2019 production, hit musical Kinky Boots, the Empire Theatres are delighted to announce that they will be presenting, Mamma Mia! as their major production in 2020.
Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical based around the hit music by Swedish pop group ABBA.
Set on a Greek Island, Mamma Mia! is a heart-warming tale that centres around young bride-to-be Sophie as her quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they visited long ago.
A celebration of love, laughter, family and friendship, Mamma Mia! is exactly what the world needs right now.
Empire Theatres Chairman, Andrew Wielandt said he was looking forward to the project getting started.
“Kinky Boots was very well received by the Toowoomba and surrounding communities and was also successful in attracting a new audience to the Empire Theatre,” Mr Wielandt said.
“This is something we hope to continue with Mamma Mia!, which is a fantastic smash hit, family friendly story, and features music by one of the most loved bands of all time, ABBA.
“Mamma Mia! is a feel-good musical, all singing and all dancing and has a wide range of appeal with our audience; We are very excited to present this musical to our community.”
Mr Wielandt said the aim of the Empire Theatre’s annual musicals, aside from entertaining a widespread audience, was to introduce new skills into the community.
“As a community owned entity, the Empire Theatre’s focus with our performances is to give our local creatives and artists the opportunity to partake in an experience that is as close to professional standard as possible,” he said.
“Our theatre is a training ground for local people to hone and maintain their skills in a professional working environment and this is something we are proud to say occurs each and every year.”
Many previous cast members of Empire Theatre musicals have taken their talents and knowledge gained through their work at the theatre to further study and performance, with several on stages across Australia.
“Ben Gillespie (Singin’ in the Rain, 2009 ) last year understudied the role of Aladdin in the professional Disney musical and Alex Woodward (EssGee’s Pirates of Penzance, 2018) is currently performing in the ensemble of the professional tour of The Book of Mormon as well as Sophie Salvesani (EssGee’s Pirates of Penzance, 2018) as Maria in the Australian and New Zealand tour of West Side Story,” Mr Wielandt said.
“We very much look forward to continuing this trend with the cast, orchestra and crew we will assemble for Mamma Mia! later in the year.”
